Pincodes by state
All states →How a pincode works
First digit: the zone
India is split into 9 postal zones. A pincode starting with 1 is in the north (Delhi, Haryana, Punjab...), 4 is in the west (Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh...), 6 is in the south, and so on.
First 3 digits: the sorting district
Together, the first three digits identify a sorting district, the regional hub where mail for that area is routed and sorted before delivery.
Last 3 digits: the delivery office
The final three digits point to the specific post office responsible for delivering mail in that locality. One pincode often covers several nearby post offices.
